ASIST

Skills-based workshop that will equip you for an effective suicide intervention should you encounter someone at risk. The emphasis is on suicide first aid - helping a person at imminent risk stay safe and seeks further help.

You should attend if:

  • You have responsibility for others in the workplace or
  • You would like to become more confident in knowing when to be concerned about possible suicide risk;
  • You want to translate your concern into knowledge and skills about how to help promote their safety;
  • You are familiar with general suicide intervention ‘tips’ but realise that you need more practical tools to help.
  • You want to establish or strengthen links with others in your industry/ community committed to preventing suicide.

SafeTalk

SafeTalk is a short course that helps people learn how to provide practical help to persons with thoughts of suicide, including:

  • Provide practical help to people with thoughts of suicide
  • Be a suicide alert helper
  • Be aware that opportunities to help a person with thoughts of suicide are sometimes missed, dismissed and avoided
  • Activate a suicide alert using TALK steps
  • Connect people with thoughts of suicide to people trained in suicide intervention

SECURE Australia ©

This popular course covers 'dealing with aggression' and personal safety. The course is designed to be suitable for new personnel and those dealing with the public on a daily basis. The course provides practical and basic skills for the workplace, and can be used as a general introduction prior to attending more advanced courses. SECURE is an acronym for Safe Environment, Communication, Utilise Plans, Response and Evasion. With a general introduction, these points cover the core components of the SECURE; 7 hour course. Participants consider perception and assessment of risk, various strategies for identifying and responding to aggression or violence, and examine actual scenarios.

Dealing with secondary stress

Research and experience has demonstrated that those working in crisis support can also be subject to stress. This 'secondary stress' has been called many things "compassion fatigue", "counsellor stress" and many more. But whatever you call it, there is no doubt that you need to "care for yourself to care for others". This seminar covers some of the research findings and presents practical tips about self care for peer supporters, support workers, counsellors and health professionals.

Support communication

This short course covers identification and assessment of stress symptoms, listening skills, mental health issues and offers practical tips for supporting your colleagues in the workplace. Suitable for those working in staff support or occupational health, and managers. This course is also suitable as refresher training for Peer Supporters.

CISM: workplace peer support

This one day course covers workplace stress management and workplace support, including psychological first aid and health promotion in stress management. Basically peer supporters / peer support officers are trained to support their colleagues in the workplace, particularly following critical incidents. This version of the peer support course includes an introduction to the critical incident stress management model and includes working in a peer support or critical incident stress management team. Participants review listening skills and examine common workplace issues in discussion and case studies. The course includes self care, ethics and referral issues.
